On 2nd April, 1916, 6th Royal West Surrey (Queens) of 37 Brigade, 12th Division, moved into the front line trenches near Vermelles on the Loos battlefield. That night, the Royal Engineers exploded 3 mines in front of New Cut, one of the trenches held by 6th Queens. 2 groups were sent out to capture and consolidate the craters that had been formed, but things did not go according to plan. The enemy Immediately opened up with their trench mortars causing havoc among these 2 groups who were forced to retire to their own lines. 6th Queens sustained a number of casualties during this small but intense action, including John Clisby. |
